The Car Display (June 23, 2006)

The car display was held on Friday about 25 miles from Gatlinburg at "On Cosby". Cosby, TN is a wide spot in the road; no traffic light, just a stop sign...but it was beautiful. A large tract of land covered by a hardwood canopy made the perfect setting for the classic British cars.

Midgets! This is Class B12 (chrome bumpers) and B13 (rubber bumpers)...

...I was scheduled to display in Class B12.

Swarms of MGBs. Every model and description.

Including the GTs and V8s, there were 12 classes for MGBs!

Chrome bumpered MGBs...lots...and fabulous. Highly contested classes.

This photo was taken after the rain started, a few cars have already departed; previously, it was SRO!

That's Mark Jackwood's gorgeous red "B". Mark took second in his class demonstrating that his handiwork is right at home with the best in the country.

MGAs...everywhere...

...and a sea of Ts.

WOW...just look at what is in this one photo!

Classy...mmm...mmm...

...mmm!

My '73 Midget...

...was scheduled to show in Class B12 - Midget Chrome (61-74). I was directed to my parking spot and unloaded. The next half hour was spent doing the last minute cleaning and detailing. A fellow walked up and took a long look over the Midget then introduced himself. His name is Paul Hanley and he is the NAMGBR Concours Coordinator. He invited me to display the Midget in Class B15, Concours. Before I responded Paul explained that by accepting I would forfeit the opportunity to compete in my original Class B12 and that my car would not be in competition against other cars, but instead, against a set of scoring standards for "originality, condition, and technical inspection". Three, two person judging teams would evaluate every aspect of each car and complete scoring forms for each. Rules preclude interaction with the judges except to answer direct questions, specify that there is to be no signage, and does not allow display of any accessory not originally delivered with the car by the manufacturer. Deviations from the original car, as delivered, results in points being subtracted from a beginning total of 1000. Of the 1000+ cars on display, 14 were invited to participate in the Concours. At the awards presentation on Saturday evening each Concours participant received a "Certificate of Merit", several received plaques noting "Honorable Mention", and several received plaques indicating "Award of Excellence". I was pleased, and totally surprised, that my little Midget received an "Award of Excellence".

That's Paul Hanley in th shorts to the right of my Midget.

Boot details added recently.

On lookers taking in my Midget while two judges confer.

Another nice RWA (round wheel arch) next to mine.

Midgets were well represented.

Concours "Award of Excellence" plaque, certificate, and dash plaques.

Driving through the mountains...

...is one of my favorite things to do, doing so with friends...IN MGs...is the very best! Below are a few shots of our drive out to and through Cades Cove, 25 miles west of Gatlinburg. (the following photos courtesy of M. Jackwood)

MGs on the move.

Great shot from Mark's B...thanks Mary.

30 minutes until Cades Cove road opens...so what do we do?

Mark and Mary.

It doesn't get better than this!
